NOTES

1 Embroidery in the Sicilian stitch (il cinquecento) is a beautiful, complex art. Material is placed on a frame and threads are pulled out. The empty spaces are then filled back in with often intricate embroidery designs, angels being a frequent motif. I thank Lilia Milli for this information.

2 What Occhipinti calls the ‘hazel-nut game’ has several variations. In general, a triangle is formed with three nuts, and to win the game the players take turns tossing a nut to make the top one fall.
